In synergy with our reimagining of time, a reimagining of space is vital to serve the changing needs of the Friends Seminary program and mission. At the time of this writing, Friends is poised to embark on the second phase of its Campus Master Plan. This phase will support new programming and learning environments that foster student-teacher collaborations and multi-disciplinary work. As both the schedule and the redevelopment projects are set to occur at the same time our community adopts this strategic plan, it is only fitting that we consider how the School can set goals that help us assess and utilize time and space to maximize student experience.
As we reimagine the ways in which we can utilize our physical spaces to create learning environments that serve the changing needs of the School:
- We will build flexible classroom spaces that support collaborative learning and interdisciplinary work necessary for students to develop as scholars, artists and athletes.
- We will create learning environments that support our new Engineering and Global Education programs such as a Makerspace and the Center for Peace Equity & Justice.
- We will build division-specific zones that encourage divisional identity and reflect the needs of students and teachers, while still maintaining an integrated k-12 community.
- We will build a performance and community gathering space that serves as a forum for our students as artists, performers, orators and activists and listeners.
- We will construct indoor and outdoor common areas that provide and promote community interactions, play and connections to the natural world.
- We will ensure that the campus is fully accessible for learners and teachers of varying physical needs, reflecting our commitment to equality.
- We will engage students in the environmentally-conscious design and development of these new spaces.
